The relentless challenges of a disabled veteran can be disheartening when their home fails to meet their needs. The physical and emotional toll can be overwhelming, making accessible housing not just a matter of convenience but a crucial aspect of maintaining their dignity and independence.
In late Summer/early Fall of 2023, Karen Gortmaker contacted Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) for help. As a dedicated caregiver to her veteran spouse, Clarence, Karen faced a significant challenge: Clarence struggled with the exterior steps of their home, often falling as he tried to navigate them. Karen expressed her empathy and sadness for her husband due to this obstacle.
Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
Understanding the urgency of the situation, AKWP Case Coordinator Tiana Freeman immediately began working to secure the necessary equipment in preparation for the work. Unfortunately, winter settled in by September, so the work could not be completed in the harsh conditions. But Tiana remained in constant contact with Karen, tirelessly searching for a ramp with handrails and someone to transport and install it once the ground thawed.
By May 2024, the ground had finally thawed, and AKWP coordinated a team of volunteers from Battle Dawgs and Alaska's Healing Hearts to help with the installation. With the generous support of these organizations and Operation Ramp It Up, a ramp was installed at the Gortmakers' home. Karen and Clarence were overwhelmed with gratitude for the group's efforts.
The impact was immediate. Within the first day, Clarence was joyfully walking back and forth on the ramp, a smile beaming across his face. "It's a very comforting feeling," Karen shared, reflecting on the relief and happiness the new ramp brought to their lives.
This life-changing impact was made possible in part by funding from the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which is dedicated to ensuring that our nation’s veterans, service members, and their families — those who stood for us — have stable and successful futures.
