Collaborative Efforts Ensure Continual Support for Navajo Korean War Veteran

Support is often not a one-and-done deal. For many veterans, improving quality of life is multi-faceted and needs continual care. This was the case for Korean War Veteran Francis Shirley, who, after receiving guidance from Diné Naazbaa Partnership (DNP) regarding his pension benefits, turned to DNP for further assistance.

Francis’ daughter, DNP Community Coordination Associate Karen Shirley, knew her father needed support in receiving his well-deserved benefits. Applying for this type of pension for homebound veterans is not easy, but rather complex; but with Karen’s guidance, he was able to gather and file all documentation. In early February of 2023, Francis notified DNP that his claim was approved, and he was awarded his benefits. Mr. Shirley was incredibly grateful for DNP’s knowledge and assistance. Because of this outcome, Francis looked to DNP as a trusted resource for continual support.

Recently, Mr. Shirley reached out to DNP as his refrigerator was becoming defective, and he wanted to see if there were any resources available to him that would help him purchase a new one.

DNP immediately reached out to local community partners to see what they could do. DNP received a response from Red Feather Development Group, a non-profit organization developing and implementing sustainable solutions to the housing needs within indigenous communities. Red Feather successfully provided Francis with a new refrigerator. Mr. Shirley was elated by what local organizations in his community, like DNP and Red Feather, were willing to do to support Navajo veterans.

DNP is honored to provide consistent support to veterans like Francis on the Navajo Nation. Keeping contact with veterans and further connecting them to their community is an integral part of empowerment. The Navajo Nation is stronger when our veterans are stronger.
