Local partnerships drive a strong community. So, when the Director of Ticket Sales from the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB)’s reached out to Permian Warrior Partnership (PWP) to support their Hometown Hero program, Program Lead Roy Dobbins knew this could be a great opportunity to uplift local veterans. The UTPB Hometown Hero Program recognizes individuals who generously give their time and talents to help make the Permian community a better place. After much thought, PWP referred local veteran CJ Summers to receive this honor.
After completing the School of Infantry, CJ was stationed in 29 Palms California with the 1st Battalion, 7 Marines’ (One Seven), famous Suicide Charley Company. While serving in One Seven, he completed Hand-to-Hand Combat as well as Survival, Escape, Resistance, and Evasion (SERE) instructor training. Summers was later assigned to Jungle Warfare Training Center Okinawa where he trained over 3,000 marines in jungle warfare/navigation/and survival. Before his End of Active Service (EAS) in 2002, CJ reached the rank of E5 Sergeant. From his service, Summers had received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, two Certificates of Commendation, and three Meritorious Masts.
Since his military career, CJ has been deeply connected to his community of Midland, TX. Him, his wife, and their daughter live in Midland where he works as the Sr. Health, Environment and Safety (HES) Manager at the Centurion Pipeline Company, as well as serving as the deacon of their local church. Feeling he wanted to continue to give back to his fellow-veteran community, PWP connected with CJ when he inquired about potential volunteer opportunities. It was then when PWP got to know CJ and his story, which made him an excellent candidate for the UTPB nomination.
CJ was recognized as a UTPB Hometown Hero in September during the UTPB vs. Angelo State football game at Grande Stadium in Midland. Along with recognition during the game, CJ received a Hometown Hero certificate, four VIP section tickets, free food and beer, and a $50 visa gift card. We are always glad to support and celebrate incredible veterans like CJ Summers in the Permian community.
