Providing Relief by Keeping Marine Veteran Cool in Texas Heat

For Marine veteran Steve Belknap, staying comfortable at home in the Texas heat was becoming increasingly difficult. Living alone in his modest trailer, Steve relied on window air conditioning units to cool his bedroom. However, the rest of his home—particularly the kitchen and living room—remained unbearably warm. Steve didn’t expect much could be done to improve his situation, but that changed when he reached out to Permian Warrior Partnership (PWP).

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.

After learning about Steve’s need for a more robust AC unit to cool his 800-square-foot space, PWP Case Coordinator Azzie Rogers contacted the local Lowe’s Home Improvement store. A manager at this Lowe’s location works with Building Homes for Heroes, an organization dedicated to helping veterans. Together, they secured Steve a 1,000-square-foot air conditioning unit, ensuring his home could be cool and comfortable again.

On October 23, Azzie met Steve and the Lowe’s Store Manager to pick up the new unit. Steve, feeling the pressure of the heat, had already arranged for its installation. A few weeks later, the local VFW installed the unit, providing Steve the relief he desperately needed.

Steve expressed his gratitude to Azzie, PWP, and Building Homes for Heroes. He shared that he didn’t think anyone would help him and that he was deeply moved by the support. Azzie reassured Steve that PWP and their partners are always here, ready to support veterans like him when needed.
