Homelessness and substance abuse are battles no one should face alone. Finding support in this battle can be a salvation for those struggling to rebuild their lives. So when Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) received a call from Chris Kyle Patriot Hospital (CKPH) seeking support for a veteran struggling with these issues, the team understood the urgency of providing this vital lifeline.
Former Army Sergeant First Class (SFC) Ryan Maguire* is a veteran who had spent quite some time on the streets battling addiction. Ryan recently took a courageous step by checking himself into the CKPH. While there, he wanted to reconnect with his loved ones, but he had no way of reaching them without a phone. This was when CKPH Military Liaison contacted AKWP Case Coordinator Bambi Brewington, who quickly stepped in to help Ryan regain this vital connection.
Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
Bambi facilitated getting Ryan a Life Wireless phone to ensure he had access to reliable communication. The eligibility process involved navigating documentation and approvals that Bambi coordinated with Ryan and the Military Liaison. Ryan was thankfully approved for the phone, but needed an address to send it to. Fortunately, Bambi was able to provide an address to receive the phone and set it up for Ryan.
During a Veteran Standdown event, Ryan finally received his new phone, allowing him to reach out to his family and re-establish his life. Bambi also connected him with representatives from the Banyan Treatment Facility, opening the door to further support after his inpatient treatment. Now, with the help of AKWP, Ryan has reconnected with loved ones and started a new job, working with Catholic Social Services (CSS) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) to find stable housing.
Ryan is grateful for the support, and his journey is looking up. AKWP remains committed to building a relationship with Ryan, ensuring he has the tools and resources to move forward, rebuild, and thrive.
