Housing insecurity is a terrifying reality for many, especially those with health challenges and financial strain. The path forward can feel uncertain, and the fear of not finding support only deepens. Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) aims to be a beacon of hope for veterans and their families in these critical moments.
A series of hardships led to a crisis in the summer for Army veteran Bobby Kim (' 84-'87). Struggling with severe health issues, Bobby was unable to work, and his family had exhausted their savings to stay afloat. They received an eviction notice in August, further compounding their stress and uncertainty. Bobby's upcoming surgery and the fear of homelessness weighed heavily on the family.
Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
Desperate for help, a friend then referred the family to AKWP. With the clock ticking, AKWP Case Coordinator Bambi Brewington worked to secure a grant from Disabled American Veterans (DAV), helping the family make a partial payment on their overdue rent and earning them an extra week to find housing.
With the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program vouchers in hand, Bobby and his family faced another challenge: finding a new home. Irene, Bobby's fiancé, tirelessly visited housing complexes that accepted vouchers. Finally, they secured a two-bedroom apartment, even though they hoped for three bedrooms to accommodate their two children. Unfortunately, the new apartment required an inspection before they could move in. With time running short, the family discussed their situation with the property's maintenance man, who went above and beyond to make the necessary repairs, working through the weekend to help the family.
AKWP continued to advocate for the Kims, negotiating with their current management company to allow an early termination of their lease and waive additional fees. With keys to their new home in hand on September 3rd, Bobby and his family were able to move in just in time. Due to Bobby's health conditions, he was unable to do much for the move, but their community of friends and family rallied to help the family in this final push.
The Kim family is immensely grateful for AKWP's compassion and tenacity. They are now settled in a safe home, relieved from the overwhelming stress they had endured. This journey, though difficult, reminded them that even in the darkest of times, hope and help are always within reach.
