There is never a way to be fully prepared for the unpredictable nature of life’s challenges. When Nita contacted the AWP Network, she was under extreme stress as she faced several obstacles that left her with few options. However, the AWP Network’s empathetic support reminded Nita that seeking help is a courageous step towards healing and growth.
In 2021, Nita ended her service as a Sergeant First Class (SFC) in the Army after 15 years. Being a part of such a tight-knit community for so long, she underestimated how difficult the transition to civilian life would be. Before she even ended her service, she found out she was pregnant with her second child. A few months later, she was laid off from her job amid this pregnancy. Her unemployment, an uphill battle itself to receive, was soon cut off. Surviving with the little compensation she received from the VA, the bills began to pile up. Medical issues also prolonged her job search, bringing Nita more stress. In the wake of this stress, her air conditioner malfunctioned during a brutal summer heat wave.
“I felt discouraged, embarrassed, and I was emotionally broken. My phone rang, and it was a number I didn't recognize. I answered, and the woman on the other end was my lifeline.” – Nita, Army Veteran
After communicating with Nita about her situation, AWP Network Director Jeanette Gilles promptly initiated steps to secure essential resources, offering a lifeline that Nita so desperately needed but was too ashamed to ask for. Jeanette spoke to Nita without a hint of judgment, allowing Nita to shed her self-consciousness and embrace that it's perfectly normal to cope with moments of vulnerability. The AWP Network connected Nita to a few of our national partners to provide support in her search for employment, as well as financial supplements to help her get caught up on her bills. Thanks to AWP, Nita now has the stability to get back on her feet.
“If you need help, reach out. You are not alone! This program gave me back a sense of pride. This organization showed me that everybody goes through harsh, uncertain times, and there is nothing wrong with a hand up. It's okay to not be okay! Use the resources and do your part! Thank you, America's Warrior Partnership!” – Nita, Army Veteran
